Selective Corporate Internship Program (SCIP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization founded in 1997 by Monica and Miguel Mancebo to provide intensive, business environment training to talented inner city high school students from New York City and New Jersey.
The Mancebos have always had a heart to give back to the community and discussed an opportunity to lend a helping hand to the young generation. In 1997, they began working with the Chancellor of the Board of Education within New York City to select students in public high school to get a feel for corporate America. Within months, they received 2000 applicants. The Mancebos and a group of close corporate friends came together to form a selection committee to interview and evaluate the applicants. After the interview process was completed, three talented students were selected. Over the next several weeks, these students were introduced to both the entrepreneur as well as the corporate America side of the business world. Some of the first corporate site visits they made were to Avon, Chase, and Time Warner.
Once the first year of the program concluded, SCIP continued to expand its horizons. The Mancebos decided to form the Alumni program, allowing the graduates of the program to keep in touch with each other and continue to utilize the resources being provided. Soon afterwards, in 1998, SCIP was officially classified as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, allowing the program to accept contributions made by private companies that were interested in assisting the program and its endeavors. That same year, SCIP also held its first Luncheon, where the guests, contributors, and alumni were honored as part of the SCIP family in its efforts to give back to the community.
The evolution of SCIP has continued to this day. The original group of three interns in the inaugural year has grown to become a class of 13 or more students in recent years. In addition, the luncheon has developed into a Black Tie Benefit Gala. Furthermore, there are more corporate and community site visits than in past years Some of these corporate site visits now include Ernst & Young, Pfizer, New York Times, and the American Diabetes Association. The latest project that the SCIP interns have taken on to promote the program is the creation of the website in 2009. SCIP is also beginning to take advantage of social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter.
What started off as a mere vision in the minds of the Mancebos more than a decade ago has grown to become an intensive program aimed at preparing the young generation for the rigors of the business world. SCIP has come a long way from its humble beginnings, and has done so in a matter of years. SCIP continues to grow year after year, with each graduating class providing more talent than the last one. However, as much as the students provide to the character of SCIP, ultimately, they are the ones benefiting the most.
SCIP is the philanthropic arm of MMG which is the first and largest full service, minority-women owned career management and outplacement firm providing a wide range of services to its corporate clientele ranging executive coaching to diversity training.
SCIP interns are exposed to all aspects of the business community and have numerous opportunities to learn via “hands on” interaction in a variety of areas including finance, marketing, sales, management and communications. With the support of Fortune 500 companies and industry leaders, they are coached in professional writing, presentation skills, office procedures and business etiquette. Interns are also able to learn the significance of teamwork and communication in the business community by completing team oriented tasks. This invaluable experience is well ahead of any existing mentoring program and we continue to build on the program’s offerings.
